Network Upgrades – Unifi Protect and Network Re-Design

Not long after Installing the CCTV cameras, Ubiquiti brought out some new cloud keys, one of which has a built in NVR and runs their new Protect CCTV software, this being the UCK-G2-PLUS.

This NVR is constantly recording from all of your attached cameras and comes with an internal 1TB drive, it also functions as a Unifi Cloud Key for all of your other Unifi devices.

The switch from Unifi Video to Unifi Protect was pretty seamless and is covered off by a Ubiquiti help article.

Likewise there is a Ubiquiti help article for migrating from a Gen 1 cloud key to a Gen 2 cloud key.

I have also been playing about with some of the connectivity in the house, increasing my collection of access points, switches and MoCA 2.0 network adapters and playing around with how it is all connected, trying to achieve maximum throughput everywhere in the house.

The initial setup was somewhat wasteful of network ports and also of MoCA 2.0 network adapters.

It was also not great for the lounge or my children’s bedrooms as they were dependent on wireless mesh connectivity.

I then ordered a MoCA 2.0 compliant 8 way cable TV splitter unit from the USA via eBay.

This allowed me to connect all of the various rooms that I had wired with coax from a central point in the loft.

Unfortunately cable the lounge was not playing nicely with the rest of the setup and caused the other MoCA 2.0 network adapters to disconnect due poor connectivity.
The same was happening with the connection to the cinema room, so I decided to run a cable from the office to the cinema room and leave the lounge wireless.
As you can tell from the various Visio diagrams, some were created prior to the cloud key upgrade as they still show the original Gen 1 cloud key.
