Week 5 (January 30 – February 05) – January Revolutions, Virtual Team Challenge, Tour De SkiErg

Monday morning rowing, 2,000m (10:21.9) warm up, 10,000m for the C2 Virtual Team Challenge.

Pretty sure the heart rate values are wrong unless I fell asleep whilst rowing, I know I zoned out a few times, but 37bpm is a touch low. 2,246m (12:12.6) cool down and stretching.

Day 30, the daily total is 1 day, 14,246m, 764 calories and 1 hour 12 minutes, running totals are: 30 days, 388,823m, 21,911 calories and 31 hours 2 minutes.

This completes the ‘Long Haul’ part of the January Revolutions challenge by completing more than 30 hours of Row/Ski/Bike exercise.

Tuesday morning rowing at work, 2,000m (9:34.7) warm up, 10,000m mainly steady state, push for the last 2K

Managed the last 2K in 7:36.0, not bad for already having done 10K of rowing beforehand (including the warm up).

2,246m (11:27.2) cool down and stretching. This completes all of the C2 January Revolutions challenges and 402,000m for the C2 Virtual Team Challenge.

There were 7 Concept 2 challenges running in January, although you were only asked to pick 2, I decided to do all 7 and like last year I actually signed up for the Big Burn.

There was also the Dark Horse January challenge of 7 workouts on 7 consecutive days, taking the total number of challenges this month to 8.

The Dark Horse January Challenge – I completed this on January 16th.

The Stretch – Row, Ski or Ride at least 500m on 20 days in January – I completed this one on January 20th.

The Big Stretch – Row, Ski or Ride at least 500m every day in January – I completed this one on January 31st.

The Haul – Row, Ski or Ride for 15 hours in January, I completed this on January 13th.

The Long Haul – Row, Ski or Ride for 30 hours in January, I completed this on January 30th.

The Burn – Row, Ski or Ride for 10,000 calories in January, I completed this on January 13th.

The Big Burn – Row, Ski or Ride for 20,000 calories in January, I completed this on January 28th .

Virtual Team Challenge – Row, Ski or Ride for as many meters as you can in January – I managed 403,060m.

In total I did 31 days, burned 22,774 calories over 32 hours 8 minutes 46.7 seconds and covered 403,060m.

Last year I also tried for all 7 challenges, but missed the Big Stretch by about 5 days, some were at the very start, so that particular one was never going to happen.

This year I managed just over 2,000m more than last year and this despite only doing a 1,000m SkiErg on 4 consecutive days due to injuring my ribs and staying away from the rower.

Tuesday evening archery, more longbow shooting just for fun.

Wednesday rest day, after the 402,000m of activity, I think I need a few days of to recover.

Thursday rest day, still not ready to hit the exercise.

Friday morning skiing, now is as as good a time as any to start the C2 Tour de SkiErg Challenge.

5,000m TT in week 1, 500m TT in week 2, 2,000m TT in week 3 and 10,000m TT in week 4.

1,000m (5:12.3) warm up, 5,000m for week 1 of C2 Tour de SkiErg.

I couldn’t maintain the 2:08 pace required for a PB. Ribs started hurting at about 2K so I backed off to something more manageable. 1,135m (7:13.5) cool down.

Saturday morning masters rowing, I arrived early and managed to fit in a 2,000m (8:14.8) warm up before going out with the masters crew, 4- stroke seat, lots of steady state, some pause drills and a couple of firm pieces (10,820m).

I then headed into Staines and bought some spicy chicken and rice for lunch from the market.

Saturday afternoon leisure rowing, first time out in my single in over 2 months, first time with my new oars, which I thought I had set up perfectly, however it turns out there was way too much overlap and I had to shorten them before I rowed any further.

Not rowing for 2 months is really showing, the confidence levels have dropped down and as a result I was a little wobbly due to nerves, I never really made it above 18spm (6,602m).

The other thing about not rowing for 2 months is that my hands have become soft and as a result I have a new load of blisters to deal with, fortunately I now have the WOD Welder to help, let’s wait and see how effective it is.

Sunday morning masters rowing, 4- stroke seat, technique focused row at 16-18spm and half to three quarters power (10,218m).

I taped up my open sores to try and avoid excessive pain, but managed to tear a couple more areas. I removed the tape after the rowing session and walked into Staines and had McDonalds for breakfast.

The morning session was quite short today, so it was still only just past 11:00 when I arrived back at the boat club, so I decided to take my single out for another confidence building session.

I taped my blisters again before heading out and had an enjoyable 4,417m row at 20-21spm, much better than yesterday and a lot fewer ‘scary’ moments.

The afternoon leisure rowing session, leisure 2x, with Marion, I was in the bow seat doing the steering. Warm up and pause paddling, then power pyramid on the way back followed by a couple more short steady state pieces (6,048m).

Tape on the blisters really helped on all of the various sessions, now I can let them dry out and harden up once more.

During the month of January I managed a total of 123 hours of exercise, walked 241km, climbed 268 flights of stairs, skied 38km, rowed 364km on the Erg and 4km on the water.

By the end of the month my weight was 14 Stone 11lb (207lb/94kg), a gain of 4lbs, partly due to eating all of my Christmas sweets and partly due to general over eating.
