MF-TC Part 10 – Wheels and Legs

The wheels were bought from Ebay for £5.29 each, they are trailer jockey wheels, have solid rubber tyres and steel centres with bearing races inside. they can be used with 20mm or 12mm axles as they come with a reducing sleeve.

I was considering a 12mm solid axle, but discovered that even with 1mm wall thickness, a 20mm steel tube is actually stiffer than 12mm steel solid round bar, so I decided to go with that.

The axles are 20mm tube that came from Wickes and cost £6.95 for a 1m length, I used 2 x 130mm lengths, so the cost for the axles is £1.80.

I did not want the wheel to rub directly up against the side of the cabinet, so I wanted to use some washers to protect it. Unfortunately I did not have any M20 washers, the cheapest I could find on Ebay was 10 for £2.25, which I considered a bit on the expensive side.

Orbital Fastners who I usually buy my hardware from charge £6.51 for 100, so for 6 it would cost £0.39, however they were out of stock.

I remembered I had a bunch of M8 x 38mm penny washers that may have come from Orbital Fastners, but I can’t find an invoice that includes them, if they did come from Orbital Fastners, then they would be £5.25 for 100, or £0.31 for 6.

I chucked each washer in the lathe in turn and drilled out the centre, first to 16mm, then to 21mm – I don’t have a 20mm drill, but I also wanted the washers to be slightly loose.

Here are the washers before,

and after drilling them out and cleaning them up.

Here are the washers, wheels, axles and starlock caps.

The M20 capped starlock washers came from Ebay at a cost of £4.29 for 5, or £1.716 for 2.

The axle was installed in the 20mm hole which was very tight and held in place with some CA glue.

Below are some shots of the completed wheel and axle setup, you can just about see the washers on the inside or the wheel

Outside view, showing the capped starlock washer.

Whilst I was waiting for yet more paint to dry, I cut the mortices in the extension table legs using the Domino, then glued and clamped them up to dry overnight.
This picture actually shows them after the glue had dried.
