Week 14 (April 03 – April 09) – World Erg, April Fool’s, National Parks, 5K PB

Monday morning rowing, 2,000m (10:17.3) warm up, then 10,000m for the C2 World Erg and the Dark Horse National Parks Challenges.

Day 3 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (3,000m requirement), 2,251m (12:28.3) cool down and stretching.

Tuesday morning rowing, 2,000m (10:14.2) warm up, then 10,000m for the C2 World Erg and the Dark Horse National Parks Challenges.

Day 4 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (4,000m requirement), 2,270m (12:15.7) cool down and stretching.

Tuesday evening I was not feeling like archery, plus we had eaten late, so I passed on shooting for this week.

Wednesday morning rowing, 2,000m (10:19.3) warm up, then 10,000m for the C2 World Erg and the Dark Horse National Parks Challenges.

Day 5 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (5,000m requirement), 2,241m (11:57.9) cool down and stretching.

I also setup our team ‘Either Oar’

for the Dark Horse National Parks Challenge, consisting of 5 Scullers and Sweepers, including myself, with the intention of completing the challenge both on land (OTE) and on water (OTW).

Thursday morning rowing, as I set up the RowErg this morning, I was connecting it to the ErgData app and noticed a 5K TT as the C2 WoD and thought, OK, sounds like a plan and more interesting than yet another 10K.

2,000m (9:57.9) warm up, then went to set a pace boat for the WoD, only to discover that this was yesterday’s challenge and I had missed it.

Not to be deterred, I checked my current PB (18:55.6) and set a pace boat for the associated average pace of 1:53.6/500m, psyched myself up for the task ahead and off we go.

500m in 1:49.4, 11.3 seconds off my 500m PB, 8m up on the pace boat, going a little fast, need to slow it down or I won’t last.
1,000m in 3:40.9, 17.1 seconds off my 1,000m PB, 28m up on the pace boat, still going too fast, projected finish of sub 18:00, pretty sure that isn’t happening.
2,000m in 7:25.7, 11.3 seconds off my 2,000m PB, 38m up on the pace boat, better pace, I might manage to maintain this.
3,000m in 11:12.2, new 3,000m PB by 5 seconds, 42m up on the pace boat, holding the pace is starting to be a challenge.
4,000m in 15:02.1, new 4,000m PB by 8.5 seconds, 29m up on the pace boat, fading fast, last push to the finish.
5,000m in 18:50.0, new 5,000m PB by 5.6 seconds, beat the pace boat by 26m.

The screen showed 18:49.9 when I finished, but rounded up when uploading to the logbook, hey-ho.

Spent several minutes catching my breath before a 3,355m (16:03.6) cool down and some stretching to take me over the 10Km line for the day.

Overall I feel I paced it well, I would have been happier if I could have held 1:53 across the last 3,000m, but I went out a bit too hot for that, happy with the overall result.

If I had submitted this time yesterday, I would have finished 85/2591 or 96th percentile across all age groups/genders/weight classes.

Day 6 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (6,000m requirement)

Friday morning rowing, my wife and children went off early to visit my wife’s mother, this left me home alone with the dog and an opportunity for a half marathon.

I was interrupted by the window cleaner, but still happy with the time, it wasn’t a time trial, just a long ‘fat burner’ spent the afternoon pressure washing the patio.

Day 7 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (7,000m requirement)

Saturday morning rowing, still ‘red boards’ at the club, 2,000m (10:08.0) warm up, then 10,000m for the C2 World Erg and the Dark Horse National Parks Challenges.

Another UT2 ‘fat burner’ workout. didn’t feel like a cool down as I still had the remainder of the patio to pressure wash. Day 8 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (8,000m requirement)

Sunday morning rowing, still ‘red boards’ at the club, 2,000m (10:27.1) warm up, then 10,000m for the C2 World Erg Challenge and the Dark Horse National Parks Challenges.

Another UT2 ‘fat burner’, 2,241 (11:41.6) cool down and some stretching. Day 9 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (9,000m requirement).

8 days into our Dark Horse National Parks Challenge and I am currently on 113,510m and our team is on 185,787m – 17% down in under 9% of the time.

Not doing quite so well with the OTW side of the challenge, only one person has so far contributed any meters and we are on 16,822m or 2% of the distance.

6 days to go on the C2 April Fool’s Challenge and the C2 World Erg Challenge, currently at 317,323m.

With more rain forecast for tomorrow, it does not look promising for getting back on the water any time soon.
