Week 13 (March 27 – April 02) – Mud Season Madness, World Erg Challenge, April Fool’s Challenge

Monday morning rowing, 2,000m (10:21.5) warm up, then 10,000m for Mud Season Madness:

Didn’t feel like doing any more today so skipped the usual cool down meters, 23 of 25 days done, only two more required to complete Mud Season Madness.

Tuesday morning rowing, still not feeling like doing extra meters, so just 10,000m for Mud Season Madness:

Interrupted by the Tesco delivery, 4th 2K was much longer than usual. Day 24 complete, one to go.

Tuesday evening archery, some of us had decided to shoot a half Vegas round with my recurve bow. The last time I shot a Vegas round was back in 1993 with a score of 452, this evening I scored 181 for the half which was well below half of my PB score from ‘back in the day’ but it was good fun none the less.

Wednesday morning just wanted the challenge over with, so just 10,000m for Mud Season Madness:

Challenge Completed.

Thursday I decided to have a break from exercise as I was feeling somewhat drained, although I did go for a long walk in the afternoon after work.

Friday morning skiing, 10,000m for the C2 World Erg Challenge:

Saturday morning the river is still on ‘red boards’, and I did not feel like going to the club for an Erg session, it is a 1/2 hour drive and I have a perfectly good Erg at home.

This was also day 1 of the C2 April Fool’s Challenge (row 1,000m on day 1, 2,000m on day 2, up to 15,000m on day 15)

I thought I would like to do my local ParkRun as I have not done it in a while and then had the ‘inspired/crazy’ idea of combining this with some cycling, rowing and skiing.

The Parkrun is just over 5Km away and I usually cycle there, and since most events count cycling meters as half, there and back would count for just over 5Km.

My new ‘event’ started at 08:30 when I left home to cycle to the ParkRun, that starts at 09:00.

5K Cycle part 1 – 5.27Km (17:01) cycle to the ParkRun, it was a bit chilly cycling to the ParkRun in just shorts and a couple of t-shirts, but I knew I would soon warm up once I started the running.

I arrived with some time to spare, my arms were a little cold, so after locking up my bike, I spent a few minutes warming them up before heading to the start.

5K run – Northala Fields Park Run

Not the best conditions as there has been a lot of rain recently and there were quite a few large puddles and a lot of the surrounding grass was completely waterlogged, so not always possible to avoid getting wet feet.

My official time of 29:52, was my second fastest time ever, so I was pleased with this, I am 6’4″, 14st 9lb (205lb/93Kg) so not exactly designed for running.

5K cycle part 2 – 5.27Km (18:38) cycle home from the ParkRun, more uphill in the journey home, and my legs were a bit tired from the run, I also had to wait for a gap in the traffic to cross one of the roads, hence the slower time, I was back home by 10:00.

5K Row

I thought about trying to get under 20 minutes, but my legs really didn’t feel like holding 2:00/500m pace.

5K Ski

I would have preferred to get under 24 minutes, but again my body was not really interested.

I finished the event at 11:00 having taken two and a half hours in total.

The various pieces were not immediately after each other, I had around 5-10 minutes recovery time for a drink between each event.

Overall I was very happy with my times and have something to aim at should I ever be mad enough to try it again.

Unsurprisingly, I spent the next several hours after my shower aching pretty much everywhere.

Sunday morning rowing, I still ached everywhere, but was hoping that I could still row. 2,000m (10:05.3) warm up and then a 6,050m row as a spot challenge for day 1 of the Dark Horse National Parks Challenge (row 1,068,604m between 1 April and 30 June).

I did this as a UT2 recovery row after the previous day’s exertions. 2,246m (11:35.5) cool down and stretching.

During the month of March I managed a total of 113 hours of exercise, walked 151km, climbed 323 flights of stairs, skied 53km, rowed 257km on the Erg and 105km on the water.

By the end of the month my weight was 14 Stone 9lb (205lb/92kg), a gain of 1lbs, this seems to be my new steady state unless I really go for it.
