March 2022 – Mud Season Madness, IWD, Virtual Indoor Sprints and World Erg Challenge

On 1 March I passed 2 million metres.

The main challenge for the month was Mud Season Madness – row 5,000m or 10,000m for at least 25 days in March.

The International Women’s Day Challenge on 8th March was to row a 5000m time trial, I did not set a new PB, but did post an acceptable time of 20:05.

I completed Mud Season Madness on day 25, but ultimately continued on to do all 31 days of March.

The World Rowing Virtual Indoor Sprints ran from March 9-13 and involved a 1000m time trial.

I had 2 attempts at this, first on 10 March with a time of 3:29.9 which initially placed me 10/93 in the 50-59 Heavyweight (Hwt) Men category and 67/364 for all Hwt men.

This was not a great attempt, I had to stop 3 times because I paced it badly and could not breathe, but still took 3 seconds off my previous PB, which placed me in the 79th percentile.

My second attempt was on 13 March, by which time my previous effort had been dropped to 47/299 and 258/1127. This time I managed 3:24.7 which improved on the Friday’s time by over 5 seconds.

This new time ultimately placed me 48/419 in my age category and 258/1643 overall and also moved me up to the 88th percentile.

The next challenge to start was the World Erg Challenge, another team challenge to row the most metres between March 15 and April 15.

On 29 March I completed the 2K 101 course, although my time trial was a bit of a disaster.

I really did not feel like doing it and even though I convinced myself to do it, I stopped 4 times due to listening to the voice in my head and finished with a time of 7:37.0 which was 19 seconds slower than the one at the start of the course.

I will have another go at the time trial after Easter when all the various April challenges have ended.

During the month of March I managed a total of 99 hours of exercise, walked 313km climbed 216 flights of stairs, cycled 0km and rowed 398km.

By the end of the month my weight was 14 Stone 9lb (205lb/93kg), 4lb loss.
