vs &#8220;bigger and older&#8221;, and whilst I would love to own a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lathes.co.uk\/bridgeport\/\">Bridgeport<\/a> turret mill, I simply don&#8217;t have the space or the ability to collect it\/move it about, plus I have to justify the potential use vs cost to my better half (and to myself if I am brutally honest).<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-j27PO7KBSgM\/V3-ELQdQcAI\/AAAAAAAACag\/c-t516105BcF89kgQ9kzXoifMEbb0tKiwCLcB\/s1600\/Bridgeport.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-j27PO7KBSgM\/V3-ELQdQcAI\/AAAAAAAACag\/c-t516105BcF89kgQ9kzXoifMEbb0tKiwCLcB\/s320\/Bridgeport.jpg\" width=\"299\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>I am not saying I won&#8217;t end up spending just as much on the smaller mill as on the larger one, however I can use what I learn on the smaller one and maybe work up to justifying a larger mill at some point in the future.<\/p>\n<p>I have contemplated various other machines available via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/\">ebay<\/a>\u00a0but I think I have settled on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arceurotrade.co.uk\/Catalogue\/Machines-Accessories\/Milling-Machines\/Model-Super-X2-Plus-Mill\/SIEG-Super-X2P-HiTorque-Mill\">Sieg SX2P<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arceurotrade.co.uk\/\">Arc Euro Trade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-xXVCNjAjQMI\/V3-Di9dDCBI\/AAAAAAAACaU\/2errDb4kX_kV_r_Jq3jW3D_yw06FOFiRgCLcB\/s1600\/sx2p.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-xXVCNjAjQMI\/V3-Di9dDCBI\/AAAAAAAACaU\/2errDb4kX_kV_r_Jq3jW3D_yw06FOFiRgCLcB\/s320\/sx2p.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>There are numerous Mini Mills out in the world, most are made by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siegind.com\/\">Sieg<\/a>\u00a0in China, and are then sold with different paint jobs, names and model numbers by the various different suppliers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlemachineshop.com\/products\/product_view.php?ProductID=3960&amp;category=1387807683\">Little Machine Shop<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grizzly.com\/products\/Mini-Milling-Machine\/G8689?gcsct=0ChMIuOnHxtmRuwIVTzznCh0RUQAAEAA\">Grizzly<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.machinemart.co.uk\/shop\/product\/details\/cl-cmd300-mill-drill?da=1&amp;TC=SRC-cm500d+mill\">Machine Mart<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.axminster.co.uk\/axminster-sieg-sx2-mini-mill\">Axminster<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sealey.co.uk\/PLPageBuilder.asp?gotonode=ViewProduct&amp;method=mViewProduct&amp;productid=9221&amp;productdescription=&amp;productcode=&amp;category=14&amp;catgroup=241&amp;catmicrogroup=&amp;analysiscode=&amp;requiredresults=16\">Sealey<\/a>, etc, etc).<\/p>\n<p>I really like the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arceurotrade.co.uk\/Catalogue\/Machines-Accessories\/Milling-Machines\/Model-Super-X2-Plus-Mill\/SIEG-Super-X2P-HiTorque-Mill\">SX2P<\/a>\u00a0because it has the solid column, and belt drive motor that many people mention as shortfalls of the original <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siegind.com\/products_detail\/&amp;productId=1f80f962-c6dd-4acb-a42b-ecb359377667&amp;comp_stats=comp-FrontProducts_list01-1325833166395.html\">X2 mini mill<\/a>, plus it has the extended Y travel and larger table of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arceurotrade.co.uk\/Catalogue\/Machines-Accessories\/Milling-Machines\/Model-Super-X1L-Mill\/SIEG-Super-X1L-Mill\">Super X1 Mill<\/a>\u00a0that is exclusive to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arceurotrade.co.uk\/\">Arc Euro Trade<\/a>\u00a0(although the table is available as an upgrade from the likes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlemachineshop.com\/products\/product_view.php?ProductID=3492&amp;category=1057823482\">LMS<\/a>, as is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlemachineshop.com\/products\/product_view.php?ProductID=2297&amp;category=1057823482\">extended Y Axis travel base<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In all, several upgrades that I would no doubt be wanting to perform already included in the base price.<\/p>\n<p>The only downside is that there is not much room under the table to allow for changes in the lead screw and nut for CNC conversion.<\/p>\n<p>I found a version of a CNC converted\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.siegind.com\/products_detail\/&amp;productId=1f80f962-c6dd-4acb-a42b-ecb359377667&amp;comp_stats=comp-FrontProducts_list01-1325833166395.html\">X2<\/a>\u00a0on <a href=\"http:\/\/sketchup.google.com\/3dwarehouse\/details?mid=7725dd1db307bece8c1bfc658b7df04e&amp;prevstart=0\">Sketchup Warehouse<\/a>\u00a0that uses a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cncfusion.com\/minimill1.html\">CNC Fusion<\/a> conversion and proceeded to modify all the parts to be those for an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arceurotrade.co.uk\/Catalogue\/Machines-Accessories\/Milling-Machines\/Model-Super-X2-Plus-Mill\/SIEG-Super-X2P-HiTorque-Mill\">SX2P<\/a>, and then started generating parts to upgrade the functionality based on ideas from <a href=\"http:\/\/hossmachine.info\/\">Hossmachine<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnczone.com\/forums\/benchtop-machines\/117282-cnc-cad.html\">Donald Bird<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-5sLuVAITuEM\/UpyyiR9L-8I\/AAAAAAAAAso\/4gqX6T49y1I\/s1600\/Screen+shot+2013-12-02+at+16.16.16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-5sLuVAITuEM\/UpyyiR9L-8I\/AAAAAAAAAso\/4gqX6T49y1I\/s320\/Screen+shot+2013-12-02+at+16.16.16.png\" width=\"233\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The above image shows a partially completed CNC conversion, the spindle for a 4th axis based on a replacement spindle for a <a href=\"http:\/\/littlemachineshop.com\/products\/product_view.php?ProductID=1341&amp;category=\">C3 Lathe<\/a>, some bearings\u00a0and M27x1.5 lock nuts, Donald Bird&#8217;s designs for an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnczone.com\/forums\/attachment.php?attachmentid=138495&amp;d=1310756983\">articulating spacer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnczone.com\/forums\/attachment.php?attachmentid=152203&amp;d=1328692591\">CNC conversion<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnczone.com\/forums\/attachment.php?attachmentid=146724&amp;d=1322117528\">power drawbar<\/a>\u00a0but using a commercially available 50mm bore 25mm stroke double action air actuator from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/\">ebay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I removed the control box from the side of the spindle as I will be controlling the spindle directly from Mach3 using Donald Bird&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnczone.com\/forums\/attachment.php?attachmentid=131062&amp;d=1302274298\">closed loop control<\/a>. I have reworked the board design in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cadsoftusa.com\/\">Eagle<\/a>\u00a0using a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ground_plane\">ground plane<\/a>, and have come up with what is mainly a single sided board 1.4 inches square (35.5mm square).<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-OVbCZ6NoXxc\/UpzWoSxT0bI\/AAAAAAAAAs4\/j6td3Lp0BH8\/s1600\/Screen+shot+2013-12-02+at+18.41.41.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-OVbCZ6NoXxc\/UpzWoSxT0bI\/AAAAAAAAAs4\/j6td3Lp0BH8\/s320\/Screen+shot+2013-12-02+at+18.41.41.png\" width=\"317\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This could be bought in a quantity of 10 from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/imall.iteadstudio.com\/open-pcb\/pcb-prototyping\/im120418001.html\">Itead Studio<\/a>\u00a0for $9.90, milled on the CNC machine itself with a suitable engraving head, using isolation routing with gcode generated by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcbgcode.org\/\">PCB GCode<\/a>, or made up on the same proto board as Donald used, which can be had from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Solderable-Copper-Small-Perf-Board\/dp\/B003DVCS0S\/ref=aag_m_pw_dp?ie=UTF8&amp;m=AWVNI60VW47QF\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0for $6.20 for a pack of 5, and are also available on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/\">ebay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once I am ready to make this I will post an article on my <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/electronics\/\">electronics blog<\/a> showing which method I chose.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For some time now I have wanted a Milling machine.
