{"id":51,"date":"2014-02-04T15:54:00","date_gmt":"2014-02-04T15:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/workshop\/2014\/02\/04\/let-there-be-light\/"},"modified":"2021-06-08T18:22:04","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T17:22:04","slug":"let-there-be-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/workshop\/2014\/02\/let-there-be-light.html","title":{"rendered":"Let there be Light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I decided that my Garage\/Workshop could do with some light &#8211; it could do with some electricity too, and I am working on that.<\/p>\n<p>I have run 4mm 3 core SWA cable from the house to the garage where I have a second consumer unit, this will be further encased in Unistrut bolted to the fence uprights for additional protection (mostly the regulations state that this should be 12ft up in the air on a caternary wire or buried 3ft down in the ground) but I believe this to be an acceptable alternative and is often used in industry for cable drops to machines.<\/p>\n<p>I am also in the process of lining the back wall of the garage with 50mm Jablite expanded Polystyrene and 11mm OSB.<\/p>\n<p>I have 4 rafters in the garage and I also wanted some lights against the rear wall above the Lathe and Mill, so I decided 10 would be a good number.<\/p>\n<p>Now if they are all on at the same time this may be a bit bright, so I decided to use a 3 gang switch and have them selectable &#8211; end wall, 1st and 3rd rafters, 2nd and 4th rafters, depending on what works best at the time.<\/p>\n<p>I bought a bunch of 2ft IP65 T8 light fittings from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyonlighting.com\/\">Lyon Lighting<\/a>&nbsp;as they seemed to offer the best price at the time, I wanted 10 fittings and they had a price break at 8 that made them cheaper for 10 units than some other suppliers for 8. In total they worked out at \u00a3113.35 including P&amp;P.<\/p>\n<p>The ones I bought have a removable gear tray which makes installation somewhat easier. They do not however come with any chain to hang them from the rafters.<\/p>\n<p>I bought some suitable &#8220;single jack chain&#8221; from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wickes.co.uk\/invt\/159439\">Wickes<\/a>&nbsp;at \u00a32.59 for 2m.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-7X565JitMFk\/UvDMD4p8lgI\/AAAAAAAAA4o\/3vmvtAowmho\/s1600\/Lights1.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"258\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-7X565JitMFk\/UvDMD4p8lgI\/AAAAAAAAA4o\/3vmvtAowmho\/s1600\/Lights1.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Then I reduced it to 9 link lengths &nbsp;which when combined with some M3x10 set screws, nuts and washers are just perfect for my steel angle rafters.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-KamXD6404vE\/UvDMhUz0qgI\/AAAAAAAAA40\/dBqoih1qIos\/s1600\/Lights2.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-KamXD6404vE\/UvDMhUz0qgI\/AAAAAAAAA40\/dBqoih1qIos\/s1600\/Lights2.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;Completed unit, 2 per light fitting, obviously they hang the other way up.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-B_NEzbW7ZyI\/UvDMhchoiaI\/AAAAAAAAA4w\/9TPIjt_HMTA\/s1600\/Lights3.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"303\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-B_NEzbW7ZyI\/UvDMhchoiaI\/AAAAAAAAA4w\/9TPIjt_HMTA\/s1600\/Lights3.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\">I will wire them up using conduit, for added protection and single runs of cable to reduce the cable bulk. I acquired some 100m reels of 1.5mm single core conduit cable a while back that will be perfect for this project, although 1mm would probably do just fine as well, it never hurts to go up in size &#8211; There is also a socket by the garage doors.<\/p>\n<p>The consumer unit has a 6A <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miniature_circuit_breaker\">MCB<\/a>&nbsp;for the lights and a 32A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miniature_circuit_breaker\">MCB<\/a>&nbsp;for the sockets as well as its own <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCD<\/a>. The&nbsp;garage is protected back at the consumer unit in the house with a 40A <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCBO<\/a> so that if there are any issues in the garage, they will not trip the house wiring.<\/p>\n<p>I have also used this opportunity to update the house consumer unit to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastlec.co.uk\/blog\/?p=64\">17th edition<\/a> dual <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCD<\/a> split load consumer unit as previously all circuits were protected by a single 80A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCD<\/a>, which was fairly normal when I originally replaced the wired fuse unit about 15 years ago, however times and standards move on.<\/p>\n<p>Splitting sockets and lighting on the ground and first floors alternately means that there should still be power\/light on a given floor in the case of an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCD<\/a> trip, The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCD<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Residual-current_device\">RCBO<\/a>&nbsp;circuits can all be isolated via the 100A isolator switch.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-MunCn0uUcR0\/WDQmshp3v9I\/AAAAAAAACu8\/LT_ub2GYaRI4L_7Pr0HomVizg5FeFvw1gCLcB\/s1600\/dual_rcd_board_layout.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-MunCn0uUcR0\/WDQmshp3v9I\/AAAAAAAACu8\/LT_ub2GYaRI4L_7Pr0HomVizg5FeFvw1gCLcB\/s1600\/dual_rcd_board_layout.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The sockets are wired with 4mm conduit cable in a radial circuit as this is simpler and uses less cable than a 2.5mm ring circuit, yet both can be backed by a 32A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miniature_circuit_breaker\">MCB<\/a>. A 2.5mm radial circuit requires a&nbsp;16A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miniature_circuit_breaker\">MCB<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-PEa7hTRYny4\/UwoRhMtvmFI\/AAAAAAAAA7U\/35Ejxw1WU7k\/s1600\/Lights19.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-PEa7hTRYny4\/UwoRhMtvmFI\/AAAAAAAAA7U\/35Ejxw1WU7k\/s1600\/Lights19.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\">I also decided that running the conduit for the rest of the lights down the edge of the garage was going to be way too difficult to get to. Running the conduit down the middle of the garage however would use less cable, less conduit and also be easier to access.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Z2f7vAjc60U\/UwoRiOwnnMI\/AAAAAAAAA7k\/dzkp_FFeMXo\/s1600\/Lights21.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Z2f7vAjc60U\/UwoRiOwnnMI\/AAAAAAAAA7k\/dzkp_FFeMXo\/s1600\/Lights21.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\">As you can see there is plenty of &#8220;stuff&#8221; in the garage to work around :o)<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\">As mentioned earlier the other walls as well as the roof will ultimately be covered and insulated as well.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\">When I ran the earth loop impedance tests for the various circuits, with all the fluorescent tubes removed and no sockets plugged in, I discovered that at the junction between the first pair of lights and those for the rest of the garage, I had accidentally connected the earth and neutral to together in the lighting circuit.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\">After I corrected this, all the other tests were fine and I now have light and power in the garage.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I decided that my Garage\/Workshop could do with some light &#8211; it could do with some electricity too, and I am working on that.
