Part 1 Ordering Parts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have recently been collecting parts to build a bare bones PC, with no moving parts, to run <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxcnc.org\/\">LinuxCNC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My intention is to mount the PC inside the controller box along with all of the stepper drivers and power supplies.<\/p>\n<p>I first bought a second hand VXL <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mustardgiga.co.jp\/download\/mother\/12ME-C7V7RH-1001R.pdf\">GA-C7V7VX-RH<\/a> motherboard for \u00a320.00 ($31.00) with free P&amp;P from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/\">ebay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-S-Og7qn1qRE\/VbDLkUYOaLI\/AAAAAAAABys\/gKyty6cwtvQ\/s1600\/Motherboard.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-S-Og7qn1qRE\/VbDLkUYOaLI\/AAAAAAAABys\/gKyty6cwtvQ\/s320\/Motherboard.JPG\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This is a Mini ITX motherboard with a 1GHz Via Esther C7 CPU, that was probably previously used in an Itona thin client EPOS system as can be seen on the <a href=\"http:\/\/parkytowers.me.uk\/thin\/vxl\/itona\/C7V7.shtml\">parkytowers<\/a> web site.<\/p>\n<p>In the above photo, you can see that it has passive cooling, onboard USB, VGA, network, serial and parallel connections and an expansion slot should I need to add a second parallel card.<\/p>\n<p>It actually came with a 64MB flash drive installed in the IDE1 slot which was an unexpected bonus.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-i14ZnOXNnm0\/VbDNGepyAiI\/AAAAAAAABy4\/gOT_iO4vv9o\/s1600\/Flash-Drive.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"222\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-i14ZnOXNnm0\/VbDNGepyAiI\/AAAAAAAABy4\/gOT_iO4vv9o\/s320\/Flash-Drive.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I bought a compact flash adapter for \u00a30.99 ($1.55) with free P&amp;P &nbsp;(actually I bought 2) from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/\">ebay<\/a>&nbsp;seller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/usr\/bigger*gift\">bigger*gift<\/a>&nbsp;to use in the IDE2 slot, into&nbsp;which I have installed a 512MB CF card I had laying around.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-NTPnlpJnRZ0\/VbDN5jaJfDI\/AAAAAAAABzA\/lHEp1pkvKEo\/s1600\/CF%2BAdapter.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-NTPnlpJnRZ0\/VbDN5jaJfDI\/AAAAAAAABzA\/lHEp1pkvKEo\/s320\/CF%2BAdapter.JPG\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I also have the option of replacing the 64MB flash drive with the other adapter and using a CF card in each of the IDE slots and swapping in different size cards &#8211; I have several 1GB cards and may yet buy one or more 4GB cards should I require more space.<\/p>\n<p>Next up was a 160W 12V DC Pico ATX power adapter for \u00a39.19 ($14.25) from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/\">ebay<\/a>&nbsp;seller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/usr\/accecity-ca\">accecity-ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-PHdHSw5aNiA\/VbDPLD73DVI\/AAAAAAAABzM\/lEICicYB8q4\/s1600\/Pico%2BPower.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-PHdHSw5aNiA\/VbDPLD73DVI\/AAAAAAAABzM\/lEICicYB8q4\/s320\/Pico%2BPower.JPG\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/parkytowers.me.uk\/thin\/vxl\/itona\/C7V7.shtml\">parkytowers<\/a>&nbsp;web site claims that this motherboard only draws about 28W when running, so 160W should be more than enough juice.<\/p>\n<p>Finally a second hand 1GB memory DIMM for \u00a30.99 plus \u00a31.25 P&amp;P also from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/\">ebay<\/a>, 1GB is the maximum that this motherboard supports, so why use anything smaller?<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-VG0HgmpStuE\/VbDPs2HJX-I\/AAAAAAAABzU\/S1MD4HlYGBI\/s1600\/1GB%2BRAM.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"239\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-VG0HgmpStuE\/VbDPs2HJX-I\/AAAAAAAABzU\/S1MD4HlYGBI\/s320\/1GB%2BRAM.JPG\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>As such the hardware for this PC has cost me \u00a332.42 ($50.25).<\/p>\n<p>I already have an old 15&#8243;
