{"id":8,"date":"2014-04-05T09:05:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-05T08:05:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-06-09T13:13:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T12:13:02","slug":"dead-cat-orders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/rcmodels\/2014\/04\/dead-cat-orders.html","title":{"rendered":"Dead Cat Parts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Buying anything from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/\">Hobby King<\/a> is a bit hit and miss with regards to product availability, even more so if using the local warehouses.<\/p>\n<p>Yes you could buy it all direct from the Global warehouse in Hong Kong, however you are likely to be hit with some fairly hefty shipping charges when the weight goes above about 500g.<\/p>\n<p>I have been limiting the contents of each purchase to 5-10 items totalling less than $100.00 and weighing less than 2kg, this way I can make use of the 48 hour Parcel Force shipping option at $5.50 and also build up my number of orders towards Platinum membership at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/\">Hobby King<\/a>\u00a0at which point I am automatically their cheapest price, rather than waiting to see if an item will be offered at a one time purchase price.<\/p>\n<p>As a result acquiring all the parts for this build has been spread across 4 or 5 orders and 3 different warehouses (UK, EU and Global), as none of the warehouses had all the required items in stock.<\/p>\n<p>I considered making my own frame several times from aluminium tube and acrylic sheet, however based on the low cost of many of the available frames, I doubt I would actually save much and it certainly would not look as &#8220;pretty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Originally I was going to use an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/__22800__Hobbyking_X525_V3_Glass_Fiber_Quadcopter_Frame_600mm.html\">Hobby King X525<\/a> frame, partly because it is cheap at $14.30 (about \u00a38.50)<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/HK-X525-V3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/HK-X525-V3-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/HK-X525-V3-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/HK-X525-V3.jpg 566w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">However this was almost never in stock in the UK warehouse, so after about 6 months of dreaming about this one, I eventually gave up on it.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I also considered the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/__22781__Turnigy_Talon_Quadcopter_V2_0_Carbon_Fiber_Frame_550mm.html\">Turnigy Talon V2<\/a>, however this was quite pricey at \u00a354.59 (\u00a332.88) and the reviews I had read talked quite a lot about the arms snapping on heavy landings, plus parts availability in the UK was pretty slim and also costly.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">In the end I settled on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/__25884__Dead_Cat_Conversion_Kit_for_SK450_Quadcopter_Frame.html\">Hobby King SK450 Dead Cat Conversion<\/a>. $18.99 (\u00a311.40) from the Global Warehouse, (out of stock in UK and EU warehouses) it has plenty of positive reviews, many talking about the strength of the frame.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">You actually need to buy both items as the Dead Cat conversion is just the carbon fibre plates, the conversion makes use of the legs, motor mounts, screws, etc from the main frame kit.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Ideally I wanted some different coloured legs, these are available in red, black and green but only from the Global warehouse at $6.15 a pair (\u00a33.70), however at the time of purchase all of these were out of stock &#8211; ah well an item for a future purchase.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">The dead cat idea is most likely\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/\">Hobby King<\/a>\u00a0cashing in on the media success of Dutch artist <a href=\"http:\/\/bartjansen.tv\/\">Bart Jansen<\/a> converting his dead cat Orville into a quadcopter.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/Orville-a-flying-helicopt-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/Orville-a-flying-helicopt-001-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/Orville-a-flying-helicopt-001-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/Orville-a-flying-helicopt-001.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I also carried out months of research on motors and making extensive use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecalc.ch\/\">eCalc<\/a>\u00a0to eventually settle on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=29063\">Turnigy D2836\/8 1100KV<\/a> Brushless Outrunner motor at $12.68 (\u00a37.60) each.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;
