{"id":76,"date":"2015-04-01T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T17:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/myhome\/2015\/04\/01\/shower-room-part-1-getting-started\/"},"modified":"2015-04-01T18:55:00","modified_gmt":"2015-04-01T17:55:00","slug":"shower-room-part-1-getting-started","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/myhome\/2015\/04\/shower-room-part-1-getting-started.html","title":{"rendered":"Shower Room Part 1 &#8211; Getting Started"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first time I updated the shower room was shortly after I moved in in 1995, the plastic shower tray cracked and started leaking onto the floor.<\/p>\n<p>This was an opportunity to replace the somewhat thin and plastic shower enclosure with a resin base and a glass panelled enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>I chose to keep with the grey colour for the resin base so as to match the existing items and I also tried to damage as few of the tiles as possible, since I only had so many left by the previous owner.<\/p>\n<p>Removing any of the tiles was interesting to say the least, since they had all been installed on the dot and dab principle &#8211; one large dot in the middle of the tile, then push it onto the wall.<\/p>\n<p>As such attempting to remove a tile had the tendency of smashing the adjoining tiles as well.<\/p>\n<p>A year or two later I also had to replace the Mira cartridge shower mixer as I had recently had the boiler replaced and the new combination boiler was not really compatible with the existing shower mixer.<\/p>\n<p>I tried changing the cartridge for a combination boiler friendly one, but it would not seal properly and just leaked.<\/p>\n<p>This meant that I had to install a new mixer, along with the joy of different entry points on the mixer and metric vs imperial fittings for the new mixer.<\/p>\n<p>This used up the remaining few tiles, so any future modifications would involve re-tiling as well.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the completion of the loft conversion, in July 2010, I decided to start on renovating the shower room, and started by removing the tiles from the walls.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-RZd2yyyzx7o\/V4KIwaCGvgI\/AAAAAAAACbk\/AU58qblAx0cwvhBMOCVlobUex0sxuBUYACLcB\/s1600\/ShowerRoom06.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-RZd2yyyzx7o\/V4KIwaCGvgI\/AAAAAAAACbk\/AU58qblAx0cwvhBMOCVlobUex0sxuBUYACLcB\/s320\/ShowerRoom06.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;As you can see from these pictures, all the wall tiles were held on with a single dot of adhesive in the middle of the tile.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-9m3YCc6yeW0\/V4KIwrhjlrI\/AAAAAAAACbs\/p5zGjD3rmqA4geon5roGowbmvRE-VkE0gCLcB\/s1600\/ShowerRoom07.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-9m3YCc6yeW0\/V4KIwrhjlrI\/AAAAAAAACbs\/p5zGjD3rmqA4geon5roGowbmvRE-VkE0gCLcB\/s320\/ShowerRoom07.jpg\" width=\"214\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first time I updated the shower room was shortly after I moved in in 1995, the plastic shower tray cracked and started leaking onto the floor.
