{"id":22,"date":"2015-03-28T21:39:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-28T21:39:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2023-01-08T14:25:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-08T14:25:19","slug":"the-build-part-3-more-of-frame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/co2laser\/2015\/03\/the-build-part-3-more-of-frame.html","title":{"rendered":"The Build Part 2 &#8211; More of the Frame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My Makerslide arrived this morning from <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.myhobby-cnc.de\/bauteile\/mechanische-bauteile\/profile\/2\/makerslide\">myhobby-CNC<\/a>\u00a0in Germany, just 2 days after placing my order.<\/p>\n<p>I should now have most of the pieces required to finish off the frame &#8211; I still need a few spacers for activating micro switches, raising the rear mirror mount and stops for the lid, but otherwise I should be good.<\/p>\n<p>I tapped the ends of the Makerslide, fitted the end plates and then added the 3 lengths of Makerslide to the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately several of my printed idler pulleys decided to split<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-198 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-3-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-3-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-3-768x687.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>obviously I did not bore them out quite enough and the force of pressing the bearings into them has caused them to fail.<\/p>\n<p>Still the overall cost of this attempt was only \u00a30.05 plus some time, so onto the next version:<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-199 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-2-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-2-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-2-768x602.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Pulley-2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk\/en\/products\/m5-x-25-x-1-5mm-penny-mudguard-repair-washer-mild-steel-bright-zinc-plated-din-9021\">M5 penny washers<\/a>\u00a0from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk\/\">Orbital Fastners<\/a>\u00a0at \u00a32.71 ($4.20) for 100 and bare bearings, this concept works just fine on my 3D printer, so why not here? The above is just an example, most of them have been put together using nyloc nuts so that the nut stays put even if not fully tightened against the washers.<\/p>\n<p>New additional cost \u00a30.22 ($0.34) for 8 penny washers, still not up to the cost of 1 Delrin idler pulley at \u00a31.68 ($2.60) for just the wheel, or \u00a33.26 ($5.00) for a complete wheel kit from <a href=\"http:\/\/openbuildspartstore\/smooth-idler-pulley-wheel\/\">Openbuilds<\/a>, and \u00a33.25 ($5.00) for a complete idler wheel from <a href=\"http:\/\/store.amberspyglass.co.uk\/smooth-idler-kit.html\">Amber Spyglass<\/a>, since I need 4 of these the cost would potentially be around \u00a313.00 ($20.00).<\/p>\n<p>My cost for a complete idler wheel is: 2 x 625 bearings (2 x \u00a30.161), 2 x penny washers (2 x \u00a30.0271), 2 x M5 washers (2 x \u00a30.0041) 1 x M5 nyloc nut (1 x \u00a30.0116) 1 x M5 x 40mm button head set screw (1 x \u00a30.0697) = \u00a30.4657 ($0.72), so for 4 idlers my cost is \u00a31.86 ($2.89), a saving of over \u00a311.00 ($17.00).<\/p>\n<p>I could also have added some normal washers between the bearing and the penny washers, however this can lead to the belt deciding to bend into the gap if it has any tendency to move about laterally.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the Y axis idlers where I have used a couple of extra M5 nuts as spacers:<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; bore (just over 6mm).<\/p>\n<p>I then assembled the gear reduction for the motorised leg using my 3D printed 48 tooth GT2-2 pulley and a 202mm, 101 tooth GT2-2 belt.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Z-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-205 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Z-3-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Z-3-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Z-3-768x465.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/Laser-Z-3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The gear on the motor is actually 15 tooth, this came with the motor, I will use this for now, but may switch it out for a 20 tooth at some point, although this gear should give me even greater resolution on the Z axis.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I installed them all in the frame and added the 1524mm, 762 tooth GT2-2 belt and the Z axis idler.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; it still requires a slightly longer belt (because I originally guessed at some of the hole locations and was out by a few mm) and a pulley for the stepper motor (this build will be covered in a separate post).<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; it turns out I only needed a 1m for this axis after all and still had some left over.<\/p>\n<p>I was now able to fit the high voltage power supply using the brackets I had printed.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; or 32&#8242; 9&#8243;) of 5mm wide GT2-2 belt.<\/p>\n<p>The belts on the laser cutter are approximately 2 x 1m (40&#8243;) and 1 x 1.5m (60&#8243;) , so 3.5m (140&#8243;) of belt cost me (18.70 \/ 10 * 3.5) \u00a36.55 ($10.15).<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;
