that being a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:112718\">thread-less ballscrew<\/a>&#8221; with zero backlash.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-xniBoa6B_q0\/U9IC6NZ9bWI\/AAAAAAAABHQ\/6Sa8QOk_2Og\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.09.20.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-xniBoa6B_q0\/U9IC6NZ9bWI\/AAAAAAAABHQ\/6Sa8QOk_2Og\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.09.20.png\" height=\"293\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>There are a few other designs that have evolved this idea a little further, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:125529\">another one<\/a> that uses cheap 608 skate bearings with 10mm rod and requires around 50lbs (23kg) of force to cause the nut to slip on the rod.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ZCoke1j5YGs\/U9IDGgaIKGI\/AAAAAAAABHY\/in6ptZFBbf0\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.08.59.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ZCoke1j5YGs\/U9IDGgaIKGI\/AAAAAAAABHY\/in6ptZFBbf0\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.08.59.png\" height=\"265\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This concept is certainly not new &#8211; on researching further, it would appear to be based on an idea that was originally&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/patents\/US3777578\">patented<\/a> back in 1972 by Xerox Corp as a thread-less linear actuator.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ylRNQXXVkzY\/U9IFMvch-7I\/AAAAAAAABHk\/iKnOt56ajXo\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.19.47.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ylRNQXXVkzY\/U9IFMvch-7I\/AAAAAAAABHk\/iKnOt56ajXo\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.19.47.png\" height=\"309\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>There are versions of this design commercially available today from the likes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amacoil.com\/rs-features.html\">Amacoil<\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-6mwNuVZgCeE\/U9ILJHk3fHI\/AAAAAAAABH8\/65yWcHbRquA\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.45.22.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-6mwNuVZgCeE\/U9ILJHk3fHI\/AAAAAAAABH8\/65yWcHbRquA\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.45.22.png\" height=\"152\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>They even produce a model that has an adjustable pitch, which is produced by varying the angle of the bearings.<\/p>\n<p>More recently in 2011 Fengdong Zhao has further adapted and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/patents\/US20130133446\">patented<\/a> a design to one that can even traverse a curved guide where the core of that guide is composed of strands of wire.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-0Mot7Cur4gQ\/U9IFc9D4AOI\/AAAAAAAABHs\/HwoBYorz-vs\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.20.48.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-0Mot7Cur4gQ\/U9IFc9D4AOI\/AAAAAAAABHs\/HwoBYorz-vs\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2014-07-25+at+08.20.48.png\" height=\"191\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>He also includes a useful calculation for determining the lead pitch for the thread-less screw:<\/p>\n<p>tan \u03b8=L\/C where<br \/>\u03b8=angle of inclination<br \/>L = desired lead (inches of revolution)<br \/>C = circumference of drive shaft (in inches)<\/p>\n<p>The formula works just as well with mm, so to produce a lead of 1mm on a 10mm rod (the equivalent of M10 threaded rod), the angle of the bearings would need to be 5.71 degrees (atan(1\/10)=5.71 degrees), for a 2mm lead &#8211;
