{"id":19,"date":"2015-04-27T19:33:00","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T18:33:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2023-01-07T19:23:31","modified_gmt":"2023-01-07T19:23:31","slug":"mini-kossel-build-part-2-frame-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/3dprinters\/2015\/04\/mini-kossel-build-part-2-frame-again.html","title":{"rendered":"Mini Kossel Build Part 2 &#8211; Frame Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because I am trying out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motedis.co.uk\/shop\/Dynamics-Basics\/Profile-Glide\/Slider-B-Type-Slot-6::99999563.html\">Delrin profile slider<\/a>\u00a0from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motedis.co.uk\/\">Motedis<\/a>, I don&#8217;t really have any choice other than to design my own carriage.<\/p>\n<p>I used ideas and dimensions from a couple of other carriages on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/\">Thingiverse<\/a>, but that is about where the similarity ends, my carriages were designed from the ground up to work with my sliders.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the final version of the model I designed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sketchup.com\/\">Sketchup<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-162\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Screen-2BShot-2B2015-04-27-2Bat-2B18.32.29-184x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Screen-2BShot-2B2015-04-27-2Bat-2B18.32.29-184x300.png 184w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Screen-2BShot-2B2015-04-27-2Bat-2B18.32.29.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The idea is that the belt is retained all the way around the toothed fixture, that combined with tight slots for the belts should mean that it is unlikely that the belts will pull out.<\/p>\n<p>The holes in the ends are for magnets that I will use with hall effect sensors as limit sensors, just like I use on my Prusa I3.<\/p>\n<p>The carriages took 10397.1mm (25cm3) of filament each for a combined cost of \u00a31.17 for 3.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the 3 printed carriages ready to be attached to their sliders:<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-163 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-2-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-2-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-2.jpg 622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The original holes in the sliders are about 2.5mm, so I drilled them out to 3.2mm and \u00a0tapped them M4.<\/p>\n<p>I then attached the carriages to the sliders with 3 x M4x20mm socket head cap screws.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-164 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-3-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-3-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-3-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Sliders-3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I decided to remove the anti-vibtarion mounts from the stepper motors and also attach them with 4 rather than 2 x M3x8mm button head cap screws.<\/p>\n<p>Previously I had been unable to tighten the motor screws as there was not enough space for an allen key to fit, even a ball end allen key was at too much of an angle to connect properly.<\/p>\n<p>So I decided to modify one of my spare 2mm allen keys I had received for free with something or other.<\/p>\n<p>Initially I thought I would cut it down with a hacksaw, but this would not even mark the hardened allen hey. Heavy duty wire cutters just about made an indentation.<\/p>\n<p>In the end I ground down the short arm on my bench grinder to about half of its original length whilst holding the allen key in a pair of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Locking_pliers\">mole grips<\/a>\u00a0to protect my fingers.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; and on closer inspection discovered that the shaft for this motor was in fact bent!<\/p>\n<p>I swapped it out for another motor and all is now fine.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose I can&#8217;t complain too much, the motors are used and 5 of them cost me $30.00 (\u00a320.00) + $20.00 (\u00a313.00) P&amp;P, admittedly prices have come down recently &#8211; 40mm Nema 17 steppers can be had for $6.80 (\u00a34.38) from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robotdigg.com\/\">Robotdigg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is a small amount of sideways rotational movement possible on the sliders, I have yet to determine if this is going to be an issue once the arms have been assembled.<\/p>\n<p>I was about to assemble the effector arms, but thought I would check they were all the same length first.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-170\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Frame-15-300x74.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"74\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Frame-15-300x74.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Frame-15-768x190.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.hslracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Kossel-Frame-15.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>I was a bit disappointed to find such a variety of lengths ranging from 178mm to 182mm, when they were all supposed to be 180mm.<\/p>\n<p>I have complained to Derek at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robotdigg.com\/\">Robotdigg<\/a>\u00a0about this poor level of quality control, +\/- 2mm or 10% is a bit much in my opinion, there is 4mm (20%) difference between the longest and shortest of my tubes.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, if I ignore the shortest one, the others are all 180mm or over and could all become 180mm with very little effort, however lengthening a carbon fibre tube is less straight forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Because I am trying out the Delrin profile slider\u00a0from Motedis, I don&#8217;t really have any choice other than to design my own carriage.
